RAFAL ZAJKO
Rafal Zajko’s ‘Unwritten’ are a series of four large-scale colourful chewing gum sculptures installed on an end of terrace wall at Munster Square. The chewing gums are a playful yet poignant representation of what and who can be hidden from society and a direct response to the secret queer bar previously located in the Crypt of the adjacent St Mary Magdalene Church during the 1970’s.
With thanks to Marc van Gilst at Lush Landscapes for installation of the sculptures.
‘It was a joy to work alongside other artists. Each and every one of their approaches were very different and personal. I’m proud to have my work positioned alongside theirs on the Story Trail. Workshops with the local community were brilliant. It was amazing speaking to them about my broader practice, getting to know them and introducing them to some basic casting techniques. Casting the chewing gum was a hit with Mosaic LGBT + Young Persons Trust. I hope the wider community will feel a sense of joy and playfulness but also curiosity about the purpose and story behind the artworks.’ - Rafał Zajko
